Allston Burr Resident Dean

The Allston Burr Resident Dean (for many decades the Allston Burr Senior Tutor) is an assistant Dean of Harvard College and is also the highest-ranking official, other than the Master, of any of Harvard's twelve undergraduate Houses, responsible for the academic and disciplinary well-being of the House's undergraduates. He or she also has primary supervision of the House's resident and non-resident tutors, whom the Master selects in consultation with the A.B.R.D. The Resident Deans report to the Dean of the College and sit on the Administrative Board, the College's disciplinary body.

Typically, the Resident Dean holds a doctorate but is not a member of the faculty, though many are appointed lecturers in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, teaching undergraduate or graduate courses. As the name implies, the Resident Dean lives in the House, and shares daily meals with both the students in his or her charge and with the Tutors and other members of the Senior Common Room.
